248 | Creating Connection and Significance Through Speaking with Les Brown

Motivational Speaker, Les Brown shares with us how the road to growth and transformation requires the COURAGE to change. If you want to evoke the spirit of transformation in those whom you serve, you must also commit to catalyzing that very thing in your own life. The intention and desire to grow must be practiced, exercised and executed consistently.

Target Audience: Les motivates Entrepreneurs who wish to use Speaking as a platform for inspiration and expanding consciousness.

Passion, Fear & the Courage to Change

Creating change is not easy. We ask Les: “What are the basics when you want to change something in your life?”

Les says it requires the willingness to assess the situation and asking yourself the question: “what direction do I go in now? Is this worth the cost for me? What Sacrifice am I willing to make? If not, then what you want in your life will be sacrificed. Courage is not an act you take in absence of fear, but an action you take in spite of the fear.

The easiest thing Les admits he does now is earning the kind of living that he desires. Now, the most difficult thing he had to do was BELIEVE he COULD do it. He says, the basics are working on yourself and developing that mindset that it is possible. It is about increasing value and being unstoppable in what is being created.

Who do I need to be?

The KEY question. Les explains that you have to, to stay ahead of the game. As entrepreneurs, we must prepare ourselves for the future and the circumstance that come about. Ask yourself, “Who do I have to be to accommodate the changes that will take place.” By working on mindset and skill set, we can win in the marketplace every day!

Ask yourself what you have going for you what is working against you? What do you need to do? Les says he disciplines himself to read 3 books per month. What do you need to do to sharpen yourself? And remember, if you’re the smartest in your group, you need a new group.

Les believes that being in business is not just about making money- but leaving a legacy. Stretching yourself is about discovering how little you know. Reflect on who you are and who you need to be. What’s the story you believe about yourself?

As we live, we earn, learn and pass it on. There is no success without successors.  Power them to become a pencil in the hand of God (Mother Teresa quote)- helping people to change the planet.

What’s aching to get out?

Did you know that 87% of our self-talk is negative and undetected from our conscious minds? People must begin to ask themselves what the calling of their lives are. As much as they have chosen IT, it has also chosen THEM. Speaking is about changing consciousness!

In this episode we’ll cover:

  • Exploring who you need to be tomorrow
  • Increasing your belief in your own VALUE
  • How to focus on what you really want
  • Using courage to develop mindset and skillset
  • Committing yourself to sharpening the self

Practical and Actionable:

There’s too much information around us yet not enough insight. Les says, there’s riches in niches. When you focus on that, (the noise will always be there) you become disciplined. You have a place to stand. Don’t be a jack of all trades. Focus on the direction. Commit to that path- the one that represents your values. Noise comes on when you take your focus off your goals.

What’s your one thing? Today’s guest is Jay Papasan. He is the best selling author of The One Thing where he explores the unexpected simple truth behind impactful results. As entrepreneurs, it is more than common to try and tackle it all – but Jay challenges us to do that ONE thing that will get you soaring. Listen into this podcast to give yourself clarity on what is important in your day to day to-do list.

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.

Target Audience: Jay has a history of serving the real estate industry. However, his book: The ONE thing is targeted to entrepreneurs who are seeking to prioritize their tasks. Jay is a lifelong writer. His philosophy encompasses the concept of having a business worth owning and a life worth living. As an entrepreneur, you get the liberty of choosing whatever job you want. Hopefully that lines up with where your gifts and passions lie.

The ONE Thing

Hopefully we all get a chance to discover what our one thing is. That thing we truly love to do – no matter what – we’d even do it for free. And because we love it, we probably seek mastery in it. We can really shine despite the hard work it takes. We can achieve this when we narrow our focus to the things that matter most. What’s the absolute priority to stick to?

The Big Picture and Daily Tasks

For Jay, this would be writing – because he’s a writer. The focusing question he poses to us is: What’s the one thing YOU can do – such that by doing it everything else is easier or unnecessary? Stop and look for it.

Most of us are familiar with the to do list that never stops growing. But, ask yourself: Of all the things I could do- what’s the handful that I really should do?

Get out a piece of paper every day and start by circling the big ones- put those on a separate piece of paper. Then circle ONE thing and that becomes your number 1 priority. What happens is people go from 2-3 pages of notes to 3-5 things that are priority. Give this simple exercise 3-5 minutes. If you give more you are over analyzing it!

TIME BLOCKING

Blocking out the amount of time for a certain task depends on the task. For instance, the ‘writing a book process’ is a deeper process. It could take 30-40 minutes to get ideas warmed up and to get into a ‘flow’ state. Jay admits that his best days are when he has that BIG block of time.

But let’s back up a bit here. What is time blocking anyway? Time blocking is the process of making appointments with yourself to do your most important work. It should be a ritual. It happens every day. It is regular. If you don’t think through when you are going to do it, it’s not likely to happen.

Guilt and Shame around the To Do List

Who’s willing to admit this? It feels inherently good when we can cross more quantities of items off our list. We want the list to be shorter- so we feel good to just cross things off the list. But it is a double sided trap. Stuff gets done- but not the big stuff.

Even more importantly, we may be putting of the stuff that scares us. Yet, we get a feeling of productivity just because we crossed many items off our list. But are those the items that are actually propelling us forward? Fear can be a fabulous indicator of where our compass should be pointed. Remember, It’s easier to put something off than to fail today.

So many of us share this dilemma. Instead of a to-do list, we should have a courage list. Opportunity lies on the other side of fear.

Practical and Actionable:

ASK YOURSELF: What’s the one thing I can do – such that by doing it, everything else is easier or unnecessary? Stop and look for it.

Go to your big list and identify your #1. Make a commitment by putting on your calendar and follow it! Everything else will unfold.

Leading change in any organization is a constant, ever evolving challenge. This requires the discipline to change and the desire to disrupt. This interview with Ryan goes deep into aspects of leadership we have not delved into before on this show. Listen to this episode to see how leadership drives investment, performance, and growth.

Target Audience: Ryan serves a broad range of businesses who are focused on effectively navigating change and growth. He hosts about 75-80 Live Events a year focused on business performance.

Innovation & Effectively Managing through Change

Businesses are changing at a rate like never before. This is the challenge leaders are facing today- how to effectively navigate today’s ever changing marketplace.

Out of Dilemmas are Born New Solutions

Having the desire to disrupt and reinvent your business is everything in today’s world. Clients are growing faster than agencies today. Technology is shifting the landscape quickly. In essence, Technology is disrupting everything. Even the way we purchase is constantly changing. Take Amazon for example. Bookselling is pretty much extinct. And one day soon, Amazon will be disrupted too. This is why we all must have an appetite for reinvention. This is a challenge every leader should be thinking about.

We are Creatures of Habit: Why that’s a PROBLEM…

The fear of failure within each of us as Leaders must be navigated. Ryan believes the biggest breakthrough in business happens right outside our comfort zones. He advises to lead from the perspective that you will be uncomfortable. Tolerance for failure is everything. Do you treat them as valuable lessons pushing you forward?

The way we lead is constantly being disrupted too. There is an underlying and constant pressure to do things better faster and differently. One could react to this in a stressful way or perceive it as a catalyst for growth.

If you’re not taking the time out to be still and think and be creative about your next steps, it will cost you. This is why it’s super important not to over schedule yourself. Be mindful of this!

What pisses off Ryan most…

Despite the fact we have more ways to communicate than ever before, Employees are starving for communication. Leadership is a responsibility we must step up to and OWN. It is also an opportunity to change employees’ lives too. Listening is everything. It’s also about the courage to set standards and hold people accountable to the standards you’ve established. Leaders must set this example first and foremost. Consistency is key.

Leading through change - adaptive, innovation Practical and Actionable:

If you want to effectively lead through change you must have a clear target. What’s the VISION? It must be clearly defined and consistently articulated because  it instills confidence in the future. It also prevents people (staff) from opting out.

Target Audience: Ron is the Co-Founder of Marketing for ECommerce which serves entrepreneurs seeking to improve their marketing strategies.

Ron’s company Visiture grew 400% when he experienced a huge eye opening opportunity: He realized he could get away from all the processes he didn’t enjoy doing and let other good people do better work than he could do. The big goal was to become a million dollar company and they made it.

There’s that word again… NICHING!

It’s not about finding customers it’s about finding the RIGHT customers. Once Ron was able to adequately identify who his best customers were, he saw that the numbers don’t lie. He quickly developed a high customer retention rate. He was then able to give a crazy amount of value and received a large amount of returns.

This is because his target market GETS the value of what Visiture does. The Marketing strategy now flowings as a result. Visiture also now has the luxury of capping the amount of customers it takes on. Ron admits that there’s a Fear of not getting all the customers but as a business matures, it can grow smart and profitably with the RIGHT customers.

The Power of SPEAKING!

Although Ron didn’t have much experience at the time, he took the plunge, (and after practicing his speech about 80x) gave his talk at IMAGINE. He gave away a great amount of content and tremendous value. The changes in his business? He was quickly slammed with leads and sales for a long time and the company grew 400%. This made Visiture an Authority in their market.

On New Hires…

He quickly had to hire many new people at once. He knew he wanted to grow rapidly and so hiring those who were experts in the areas he was not allowed for that growth.

rondod207smIn this episode we’ll cover:

  • How Ron grew his company 400% quickly
  • Why Speaking is so powerful for your business
  • The power in hiring a team
  • Why Niching is everything
  • Why your target market GETS the value you bring

Practical and Actionable:

Do what you do best and get people behind you who know what they are doing to take over the other parts of the business. Take Massive Action. Get hyper focused. Ensure the marketing side of things is being driven by an expert in that area.

200 | The Trap of Success with Gene Hammett

Powered by the Simple Podcast Press Player

200 - Gene HammettThere is always a choice. The choice is not always easy, but there is always a choice. To create something amazing and innovative you have to leave the comfortable zones of work. To really go for the big goals and dreams that you want, you have to let go of what you have right now to get what you really want. Once you reach a level of success, you begin to play it safe (even though you don’t see it that way). Discover how to avoid the trap of success.

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.

Target Audience: help businesses and leaders stand out and help them build deep trust

This episode is for those wanting to be a trusted advisor for their clients. You are constantly accessing the courage within, want to break away from the status quo and think differently. This takes a lot of fearlessness. You’re a Trailblazer, a rule breaker a Renegade. Doing this every day means making a decision to see the world and yourself in new ways.

Exercise! The Power of 3

Get out a pen and paper and write down 3 words you want your clients to say about you. It is helpful to you to document what you want to hear.

There’s got to be a better way…

Gene himself came to a point in his entrepreneurial journey where even though he was making money, he felt dissatisfied and unfulfilled. He was afraid of losing everything. At the same time, he wasn’t truly embodying innovation. He was trapped in his own success and he was not stretching out of that comfy comfort zone.

I lost everything ($3 million)… & I had to start over.

Bankruptcy, settlements and more. Bye bye house. Bye bye money. His confidence was compromised. Despite the losses, Gene decided to keep going.

“At the end of the day people won’t remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel” ~Maya Angelou. Gene eventually understood this golden nugget within the darkness and decided he wanted to do and help others achieve that as well. It became his mission.

Breaking free of the comfort zone (3 components)

Mindset: This is about how you think about things. It’s about how you see the world and yourself. What gets in the way of this is that inner critic – that little voice inside you that tells you you’re not enough, that it is not the right time. It keeps you from investing in yourself and that is a huge problem when people are trying to break free from where they are.

Strategy: A foundational concept Gene drills into his clients is that you can’t be all things to all people. So who are you for that certain niche?

Action: Each and every day, you are presented with a ‘test.” Gene has learned that procrastination or waiting for things to be perfect prevents any action from happening. Move and do things you’ve never done before. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got the best strategies all around if you aren’t taking action.  This is what ultimately catalyzes results!

What is the one skill you need to be successful?

People are so focused on the tools and the strategies their mission. But what is actually missing is a deeper understanding of your inner game. This includes your mindset, the story that you’re living and the truth that you accept and live by. Who do you need to be for your clients to say those 3 words from that exercise we did earlier?

2 Types of Courage:

Pivotal Courage: Despite any fears or setbacks, you get back on your feet and move forward.

Silent courage: lives inside of us and we try to quiet as much as we can because we are afraid. This actually shapes more of our future than Pivotal Courage because of the daily battle with those fears and doubts. What is your habit of acknowledging your fear and moving forward anyway? “Courage is being scared but saddling up anyway” ~John Wayne

200smIn this episode we’ll cover:

  • 3 components to moving past your comfort zone
  • Uncovering your fears
  • Saddling up despite the fears
  • The 2 types of courage
  • How to create a Courage List

Practical and Actionable:

Create The Daily Courage List:

What are the things you’ve been wanting to do that you haven’t? Describe the fear you have about anything you’d like to be courageous about. Understand why you fear that. It takes courage to value our own gifts but once we do, we can move mountains.

Getting more quality leads for your business is not about going broader. You are much better off narrowing your focus to the right clients. Not all clients are the same. Do you know your ideal client? In this show, Marc Mawhinney from the podcast Natural Born Coaches shares his insights on why you want to niche and how to niche. Listen in to discover how to get more quality leads for your business.

Find niche, Marketing, quality leads

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.

Target Audience: Marc is a Coach who coaches coaches. His aim is to guide coaches into building stronger businesses. Specifically, he works with people newer coaches in their first or second years.

Why did Marc choose Coaches as a NICHE?

Like many entrepreneurs, Marc started out of focus (no niche) and targeted all entrepreneurs. After a while however, something resonated with him about coaches because he truly understood their struggle on a deeper level (since he was himself, a coach). He decided to focus on that market and dedicated himself to getting really good at servicing that market.

The NICHE

According to Marc, people are afraid to niche because they fear leaving clients off the table. However, in the process of trying to work with everybody you end up working with NOBODY. You’re left wondering why your roster is so low and your wallet is empty.

SEIZE Your Niche

In guiding coaches to hone in on their specific niche, Marc has developed a process to define it for yourself. He states that you must validate the niche by know what’s going on. This includes researching the niche well. Facebook groups actually help to validate the niche. This will also direct your social media strategy. Pay attention on what is being said on the discovery calls. Be sure to talk to people in that market in general. And lastly, ensure there aren’t too many people out there doing what you want to do.

Remember to have a personal motivation when choosing a niche. Steer away from distracting yourself with new things you need to learn. Rather, refine, focus and expand on what you are already good at.

What are the fears when it comes to NICHING?

Marc often sees coaches leaning towards doing it like the others. Yet, that is precisely why you should be running the other way. Do it your own way, so you may stand out in the crowd.

182smIn this episode we’ll cover:

  • Why going broader will leave you with an empty pocket
  • How to get leads that match your service
  • The process Marc uses to help his target find theirs
  • Why people are afraid to niche down
  • Why you letting go of perfectionism is essential

Practical and Actionable:

Take some time to research but don’t think too much. This shouldn’t take 6 months or a year. Don’t procrastinate. Choose something that resonates with you and that you feel good about. It’s about action. Create a good plan, but don’t be a perfectionist.

176fWhen you “steal the show,” you are performing at your highest levels. Do you want to be a better performer in all of life’s important moments? Do you want to influence your audience when it counts – during sales conversations, business presentations, keynote speeches, and more – and succeed in high-stakes situations? We have 5-time NY best selling author, Michael Port, on the
show today and he shares his wisdom on performing at your highest level. This is for speakers, coaches, consultants and just about anybody ready to raise their game.

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.

Target Audience: Speakers, coaches, consultants and those wanting to be better performers both on the stage and off.

Public speaking and performing considers the following to be a “Performance” (it’s not just speeches!)

  • job interview
  • negotiation
  • sales meeting
  • skype call

The Fear & the Worry of Speaking…

Your Mindset= you must see yourself as a performer. Michael Port says, “You have a desire to make an impact and on the other hand, you have the desire not to be ridiculed, made fun of or rejected. But those 2 desires cancel each other out/get in the way. So if you want to go out there and do big things, people may laugh at you from time to time (I get negative reviews on my books). Fortunately, there are more people who say they like what I do. But there’s no way i can reach those people unless i was willing to be fully self expressed. If you’re willing to be fully self expressed, you begin to silence the critics and crush your fears…”

There are 2 types of critics:

Those in their seats &….
YOURSELF.

The way we see ourselves influences the choices we make! if we have the courage to be ourselves we can truly shine. being liked vs. creating real impact. we must decide whether we want results or approval.

Elements to Speaking (avoid just highlighting rewards because it seems out of reach)

  • BIG IDEA
  • Promise (big idea supports the promise)
  • You understand the way the world looks to them
  • Provide Steps & Systems

176smIn this episode we’ll cover:

  • Why you’ve got to find the courage within to be fully expressed
  • How you perceive yourself is EVERYTHING
  • How to be a better performer on stage and off stage
  • The 9 quick fire tips to use when working on your speech.
  • The MAIN Elements you need for Speaking (forget the fluff)

Practical and Actionable:

Here are the 9 Quick Fire Tips from Michael Port you can start implementing now…

1. The Opening – cut the filler words and phrases, “Hey I just flew in from…”; get right to it instead of putting in unnecessary words to get the audience engaged

2. The Closing – make it powerful, yet it doesn’t have to be filled with fireworks; ensure the audience has taken the big idea of the speech and never do anything after the applause

3. Emotional Connection – really the most important thing is connecting at an emotional level with the audience; you might think your “how to” speech doesn’t need emotional elements, yet if you want your audience to connect to you after the speech, you want to connection with their emotions.

4. Emotional Contrast – any speech that is just one note is boring; great speeches have contrast in content, structure and emotions; move from sad to funny to engage the audience; this keeps them on the edge of their seats in a good way

5. Eye Contact – don’t stare too long to make someone uncomfortable; scan the room and look at people to draw them into the moment (Remember: Don’t picture the audience naked either.)

6. Movement – use the whole stage to connect with the audience using your movements; don’t wander or look down as these cause the audience to disengage and question your influence

7. Slides – it is never a question of using slides or NOT using slides; the issue is how you use them to support your message; Seth Godin is a master at using slides and can use 150 slides in a single presentation; use slides to write your speech first and create slides to support your message (most people want to write slides then write the speech; this places the slides in the performer’s seat instead of you).

8. Audience Interaction – must be in proportion to the amount of trust you have developed with the audience; opening with a question that is too invasive will cause you to lose the audience; by the end of the presentation, you have built more trust and you can ask more of the audience

9. Practice – Michael believes that you must practice your speech. OK, this is not news to you. However, are you practicing with the awareness of the above tips? In Steal the Show, Michael gives insights to better practice techniques that will make you more prepared for your performance on stage.
