248 | Creating Connection and Significance Through Speaking with Les Brown

Motivational Speaker, Les Brown shares with us how the road to growth and transformation requires the COURAGE to change. If you want to evoke the spirit of transformation in those whom you serve, you must also commit to catalyzing that very thing in your own life. The intention and desire to grow must be practiced, exercised and executed consistently.

Passion, Fear & the Courage to Change

Creating change is not easy. We ask Les: “What are the basics when you want to change something in your life?”

Les says it requires the willingness to assess the situation and asking yourself the question: “what direction do I go in now? Is this worth the cost for me? What Sacrifice am I willing to make? If not, then what you want in your life will be sacrificed. Courage is not an act you take in absence of fear, but an action you take in spite of the fear.

The easiest thing Les admits he does now is earning the kind of living that he desires. Now, the most difficult thing he had to do was BELIEVE he COULD do it. He says, the basics are working on yourself and developing that mindset that it is possible. It is about increasing value and being unstoppable in what is being created.

Who do I need to be?

The KEY question. Les explains that you have to, to stay ahead of the game. As entrepreneurs, we must prepare ourselves for the future and the circumstance that come about. Ask yourself, “Who do I have to be to accommodate the changes that will take place.” By working on mindset and skill set, we can win in the marketplace every day!

Ask yourself what you have going for you what is working against you? What do you need to do? Les says he disciplines himself to read 3 books per month. What do you need to do to sharpen yourself? And remember, if you’re the smartest in your group, you need a new group.

Les believes that being in business is not just about making money- but leaving a legacy. Stretching yourself is about discovering how little you know. Reflect on who you are and who you need to be. What’s the story you believe about yourself?

As we live, we earn, learn and pass it on. There is no success without successors.  Power them to become a pencil in the hand of God (Mother Teresa quote)- helping people to change the planet.

What’s aching to get out?

Did you know that 87% of our self-talk is negative and undetected from our conscious minds? People must begin to ask themselves what the calling of their lives are. As much as they have chosen IT, it has also chosen THEM. Speaking is about changing consciousness!

In this episode we’ll cover:

  • Exploring who you need to be tomorrow
  • Increasing your belief in your own VALUE
  • How to focus on what you really want
  • Using courage to develop mindset and skillset
  • Committing yourself to sharpening the self

Practical and Actionable:

There’s too much information around us yet not enough insight. Les says, there’s riches in niches. When you focus on that, (the noise will always be there) you become disciplined. You have a place to stand. Don’t be a jack of all trades. Focus on the direction. Commit to that path- the one that represents your values. Noise comes on when you take your focus off your goals.

Christine Hassler, author of the book Expectation Hangover gets vulnerable about how she found true happiness. In using the experience of a crisis, she found the excuse to go through a soul transformation. Now she helps others do the same! On this episode, we talk about how the way to do truly impactful work is by answering our own inner calling. It is about understanding that the answers cannot be found anywhere outside of ourselves.

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.

Target Audience: Christine travels the globe hosting retreats and speaks at events. She helps people answer the vital questions of: Who am I? What do I want? How do I get it? And What’s the impact I want to make?

After a quarter life crisis and several personal and professional losses, Christine decided to reorient her life. She realized she had been seeking happiness outside herself. Yet, she finally understood happiness could only be found from within. This understanding totally flipped her orientation and perspective on life.

Expectation Hangover (Christine’s published book)

What was aching inside that made the book happen? Christine shares that the stream of crises provided a huge window of opportunity for transformation to occur. It’s what Christine calls the “Expectation hangover.” We want to get out of the feeling of pain, disappointment as quickly as possible. Some of us see it as an opportunity for healing. It is a chance to get out of destructive cycles you may be repeating.

When it comes to heartache, (in business or personal) ‘quick fixes’ don’t really cut it. This, Christine wanted to create a holistic and comprehensive book that serves as a treatment plan to help people heal from some of their deepest pains.

On a soul level, it is important to feel in touch with our gifts, like we are leaving behind a legacy. At the core, each of us wants to create something that is meaningful. The hard part is that we are wired and taught how to achieve success externally and logistically. We are not taught to know what success really feels like on an internal level. We’re not taught how to look at our own shadows.

To do impactful work, we have to be clear. We need a solid foundation. It is easy to build a business that makes money but not as easy to build something truly connected to who we are on the soul level.

Sometimes we need an expectation hangover to get ourselves in gear. But sometimes we are afraid of making the changes because of the unknown future. And then, the universe might bring us that expectation hangover because something needed to change. All in all, we are the ones who manifest the changes in our lives.

Activating People to Move Forward with More Clarity

What Christine first does to help her clients is identify their compensatory strategy. As babies we were totally whole. Then life events caused us to have these compensatory strategies in attempts to feel that wholeness again. For example becoming a people pleaser or an over achiever are 2 examples of a compensatory strategy. The motivation stems from a place of lack. This way of living is unsustainable if true happiness and fulfillment is what one seeks.

What is motivating your success, truly? Does it stem from some pain? Shift to the possibility of what you could create based on INSPIRATION rather than MOTIVATION. That changes the context of what SUCCESS really means!

What’s the difference between INSPIRATION VS. MOTIVATION

Motivation- IS a drive and a push. Often people are hard on themselves and they don’t even realize it. Pressure- very heady and stems from an external rather than internal.

Inspiration – is about feeling. It is an inner CALLING. There are feelings of excitement, enthusiasm and resonance with who you are. Inspiration comes from vision and moves us forward. It has a much lighter quality while also having momentum.

In this episode we’ll cover:

  • Seeking happiness from within
  • Using crisis for transformation
  • How to do impactful work
  • Answering our Souls’ inner calling
  • INSPIRATION VS. MOTIVATION

Practical and Actionable:

Get out a piece of paper. Mark it 1-5
Write down your top 5 core values. Most can’t do it. Or perhaps they haven’t given it a lot of thought. Our values are our compass. That’s how we know what we are inspired by. Before making decisions, check in to see if the decision lines up with those values. Write down your vision. Use your imagination productively. Rather than worry, create a positive vision. Write it, see it, feel it every day. Let your vision be your gas to pull you forward.

Making a New Success Habit Stick

Have you tried making a habit to accelerate your personal growth? Most of us have but have had difficulty sticking with it. Jen Macquarrie, founder of Bright Habits shares with us the essential elements we need to maintain momentum. We also explore how to mindfully observe the inner dialogue going on in our heads and how to shift into a more empowering mindset.

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.

Target Audience: Jen serves busy professionals and/or entrepreneurs who are juggling several areas in their lives. They may be struggling to keep up with everything. Yet, they are craving self care and looking to creating better habits for better energy, support and achieving their goals.

Habit Success Coaching

Habit success coaching was something Jen delved into herself and found that it totally transformed her from the inside out in as little as two years. She soon fell in love with coaching. This caused her to feel a strong calling to now serve others by helping them change their mindset and become their greatest versions.

The 5am Wake-Up Call

A big part of personal development is finding a bracket of time in the day to practice routines dedicated to personal development. She personally found it challenging to find time in the day to do it. So, she decided to do it at the very beginning of her day by waking up at 5am. Her routine consists of a workout, playing guitar, and gratitude writing. She knew right away that she felt proud of herself. Over time, this became a habit that was automatic.

Jen says in order to wake up so early, it is crucial to adjust your bedtime routine. She even suggests setting up a ‘bedtime alarm’ 45 minutes before bed. This signals you to start to wind down to prepare for sleep. Plus, you can avoid sleep deprivation!

When you create a new habit it does requires sacrifice. Jen says our willpower is strongest in the morning and it diminishes as the day goes on. Any important tasks you want to accomplish should be done early in the day because you are more likely to get them completed.

Making New Habits Stick

Firstly, it is important to know your goal. Your WHY. What specifically can get you closer to that goal? Decide when you will do this habit. Commit by writing down your plan. Have accountability of some sort (hire a coach, tell people, have a support group, etc). Mentally prepare yourself for the fact that it may be easier to start (because of excitement) than maintain the habit. It is possible that the initial motivation may wear off. Thus, decide to stay committed.

A new habit is not something you feel you should do but a feeling of ‘I MUST.’

Remember to choose self compassion over criticism. We are all human- there will be times there will be disruptions or life events- don’t put yourself down or be hard on yourself. Shame might make you quit. Keep in mind that you can always try again tomorrow. The key is to keep going and start again.

What the Trap of Success Means to Jen

Once you achieve the success, it’s tempting to be more lazy. You might take it for granted or get too comfortable. If you’re really comfortable- there may be something wrong. You can’t progress that way.

Mindset Affirmations

Notice negative thoughts/self limiting beliefs. Catch yourself. Write them. Replace them with something more empowering.

According to studies, it takes 66 days to make a habit stick. Of course, this depends on the habit. Complex habits may take up to 3 months or more. It also depends on the person.

In this episode we’ll cover:

  • How to make new habits stick
  • The best time of day to perform your new habit
  • Why disappointment is a chance to grow
  • Why shaming and criticizing yourself doesn’t work
  • What to do about limiting beliefs

Practical and Actionable:

Know what your goals are and where you’re headed. Pick a habit. Set yourself up for accountability and to make a plan. Decide: when, where, what time of day. Make sure you repeat it preferably every day so that it becomes automatic. New habits require repetition.

228-daniel-battan

Our guest, Daniel Battan is the founder of “Beyond The Ceiling.” Daniel saw that the problem existent within many entrepreneurs was that they saw a “ceiling” for themselves – or in other words, a limited potential that could be reached. However, the “ceiling” is NOT the ultimate potential one can reach. There is ALWAYS more (think: “the sky”). Beyond The Ceiling is about stepping outside and realizing that there is no ceiling in your capabilities. It is unlimited! Daniel brings a very grounded approach that can be used by entrepreneurs.

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.

Target Audience: Daniel serves Serial/Tech Entrepreneurs who want to become visionary leaders.

Daniel focuses on entrepreneurs. He saw an opportunity in the sector and aims to bring new standards to the entrepreneurial field. There are always skills and mindset capabilities to improve upon. However he saw that many tech entrepreneurs were missing this one key piece in their business: Growing the person who ran it the business.

New Zealand: A Place of Innovation… HOWEVER…

Daniel’s home country of New Zealand is comprised of a society that is quite self reliant being that it is geographically isolated. However- he often saw that people do not believe in ourselves and/or do not believing in other people. His mission is to build the nation’s GDP (Increase Gross Domestic Confidence). And he’s doing it one person at a time- and beginning with the entrepreneurial community.

Daniel serves entrepreneurs who are at a conundrum- they have had financial successes but are now wondering where their happiness has gone. They have lost their sense of purpose and contribution to the world. They are rich in poor ways.

Why choose Confidence for ourselves and those around us?

Because, Daniel says, it makes a better world! There is nothing worse than a life that lacks confidence. The consequence? Regret! Lots of it! With confidence you can do the things you want to do.

The Power of Personal Development is rooted in healthy self esteem. In school in and in life in general,  we’re taught that success is about the result and many people end up chasing a result. However, this is not the meaning of happiness. And without happiness, what is the significance of success?

We gain confidence from the actions we perform today. These actions should be in line with who we truly are.

Practical and Actionable:

  1. A Practical step stems from 2 things. First, the art of confidence is a mindset. It is NOT about trying to change things about yourself. Always aim to serve. Keep in mind that self doubt is not actually a problem. Don’t suddenly judge yourself for having self doubt. Rather, acknowledge it- ask yourself is it true and useful? Make a conscious choice to take action in that state. Transform the state that you notice you are coming into confidence.
  2. Know what you are doing. Master your craft. Over prepare for those moments. Know yourself so well that you are speaking from the heart.

Getting someone to YES is a part of life. It might in business or in your personal life. Have you ever tried to get a 9 year old to say YES to cleaning his room? Well it takes certain skills. Our guest is Matthew Kimberley who shares insights on getting to YES in business. Matthew is a sales master and his wisdom on sales will help you grow your business.

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.
Target Audience: Matthew targets lawyers, accountants, creative professionals, coaches and/or consultants. His aim is to help generate more leads, convert more paying clients and scale into effortless profitability.

A Holistic Approach

Matthew says the relationships you make with others who may or may not become your client is everything because you want to ensure people around you are talking about you in a positive way.
He claims the biggest reason people don’t sell is because they aren’t having enough sales conversations or making any sales offers. Sales conversations require instigation. A system needs to be put in place – a sort of checklist to get there without sounding like an infomercial. Like any muscle, our sales muscle needs to be strengthened. Practice IS required. Matthew calls his system “the Form.” And here it is for you…

The FORM: 16 Aspects (Highlights below! Listen in for fuller explanation)

  • The Qualification Stage: making sales offers to the right people. Those who are inappropriate are a waste of your time.
  • Control- the system
  • Likability
  • Credibility: Significance of being published; etc.
  • Be sure to create marketing that Elicits an immediate visceral yes and then provide the solution
  • Appropriate Risk Reversal

What’s the Hardest aspect of the FORM?

Matthew finds that straying away from putting the client on a pedestal is the hardest mindset for people to transform. Shifting from that mindset to the mindset that the best thing for them is YOU makes all the difference. Think about it: a dentist doesn’t ever thank YOU for coming to your appointment. You, the customer, thank him- right? As an entrepreneur you must go into conversations with that mindset.

Practical and Actionable:

Have more sales conversations. By multiplying your sales efforts you will multiply your results. Holistic the network around you. When more people who are around you say good things about you, your yeses will increase. It is then easier to: appear more credible; get more endorsements when the right people are saying positive things around you (joint venture relationships). You can proactively build your relationships if you don’t have any. Go out there and build with people who matter to your business and who can help you get things you can’t get on your own.

Stories have become a key part of marketing and frankly, of business growth. We remember stories. We get emotionally connected through stories. Today’s guest is John Livesay who helps entrepreneurs tell their stories. Most if his experience is through raising money for start-ups, but don’t discount the core elements of storytelling even if you aren’t raising money.

Target Audience: John targets Tech CEOs because they are left brained. These types tend to have trouble selling because imagination, storytelling & thus marketing and selling happen on the right side of the brain. John helps them make their marketing system compelling and inspiring so that people can join your team.

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.

What Will People Remember About You?

People remember your stories not your numbers. According to John, good stories have these parts:

  • EXPOSITION- to paint a picture
  • PROBLEM- what you learned
  • TYPE OF OUTCOME- inspirational part

Practice Practice Practice…

When you’re telling your story, you simply can’t wing it. You must practice because that will give you CONFIDENCE which ultimately sells your story. Be a co-pilot with the person you are speaking with. Outline the milestones of where you are taking people on your story. Make sure you have something you’ve overcome in your story. Remember that the human mind CRAVES suspense. Plus, it shows you have tenacity and grit.

ALSO – don’t try to be perfect- nobody can relate to that. Be a progressionist. How did this story help you progress?

How Long Should My Story Be?

Your opening story= 90 seconds. Grab their focus so they are willing to hear the rest. Have a good closing. Otherwise, people won’t remember it.

DONT’S

Don’t end with question! Why? Because the confused mind always says no. BE relatable. Don’t express terms people may not understand. Don’t say “there’s no competition.”

Mindset Elements to a Story:

How you think is what impresses investors. It is a powerful way to look at business even if you are not ‘selling.’ This is about Confidence (not arrogance); A story that is inspirational; & a Closing – where you land the plane. Create a SPECIFIC asking. Be EXACT- especially be exact with WHO you are asking. BE YOURSELF TO BE AN AUTHENTIC STORY TELLER.

Practical and Actionable:

Work on your CONFIDENCE- 1) get your butterflies in stomach to fly in formation. Dont ignore the nerves. Use the nervous energy to work for you rather than keeping it in. Don’t worry about what people think about you. Shift your focus on how you can serve. Write about 4 or 5 moments of certainty in your life. How did you feel? Look at that list anytime you need to shift yourself.

2) Stand for 2 minutes like superman or superwoman to decrease cortisol and increase testosterone. Focus on this before you pitch.  220 John Livesay SM

Ron’s company Visiture grew 400% when he experienced a huge eye opening opportunity: He realized he could get away from all the processes he didn’t enjoy doing and let other good people do better work than he could do. The big goal was to become a million dollar company and they made it.

There’s that word again… NICHING!

It’s not about finding customers it’s about finding the RIGHT customers. Once Ron was able to adequately identify who his best customers were, he saw that the numbers don’t lie. He quickly developed a high customer retention rate. He was then able to give a crazy amount of value and received a large amount of returns.

This is because his target market GETS the value of what Visiture does. The Marketing strategy now flowings as a result. Visiture also now has the luxury of capping the amount of customers it takes on. Ron admits that there’s a Fear of not getting all the customers but as a business matures, it can grow smart and profitably with the RIGHT customers.

The Power of SPEAKING!

Although Ron didn’t have much experience at the time, he took the plunge, (and after practicing his speech about 80x) gave his talk at IMAGINE. He gave away a great amount of content and tremendous value. The changes in his business? He was quickly slammed with leads and sales for a long time and the company grew 400%. This made Visiture an Authority in their market.

On New Hires…

He quickly had to hire many new people at once. He knew he wanted to grow rapidly and so hiring those who were experts in the areas he was not allowed for that growth.

  • Why Speaking is so powerful for your business
  • The power in hiring a team
  • Why Niching is everything
  • Why your target market GETS the value you bring

Practical and Actionable:

Do what you do best and get people behind you who know what they are doing to take over the other parts of the business. Take Massive Action. Get hyper focused. Ensure the marketing side of things is being driven by an expert in that area.

206-Bob DunhamLeadership is a concept that people can easily spout off a definition. The interesting thing is all those definitions will seem right yet incomplete. Target Audience: Bob serves individuals in Leadership roles.

Bob is a man who’s been asking the question what is leadership? How do you do it and how do you connect it to really taking care of people? This is in contrast to becoming a slave to some kind of model. Being a leader is about the production of results.

Bob  thinks we need to come back to the core and the foundations of being human in order to if understand leadership and really make a difference in the world.

If we don’t know what leadership is, how can we do it well?

Unpacking the Myths:

  • “Leadership is about being in control”
  • “Leadership is about giving orders”
  • “Leadership is about knowing the most”

Leadership is about having followers! These are individuals who are with you to produce an agreed upon outcome.

What makes a Good Leader?

They declare a future that others commit to. Leaders coordinate action into realization. So what is the shared commitment you have with others? That’s the foundation which is rooted in relationships.

What is Generative leadership?

This is about taking ACTION. The model and understanding is not enough. It’s a performance art. leadership is about how we face the unknown facing fear – how to create when no one has the answer.

What is ACTION?

There’s Commitment and then there’s Compliance. Compliance doesn’t hold the potential for a whole lot  of energy.  OWNERSHIP on their hand, is energized because you automatically have CARE in the mix which produces  Value and Satisfaction to those you serve.

Care comes up in the Conversations we have. All action comes from conversations. What conversations are you not having?  This is about emotionally connecting with people too. Are you producing trust or fear? This is what generates the results.

Target Audience: Paul is an Executive Life Coach. She serves entrepreneurs (with Enterprises) whose goal is to have an impact in the world.

Paula’s perspective highlights the fact that we each have a unique design. Everyone of us is a beautiful human being and an Exquisite Inventor of Life.

One of Paula’s philosophies is that any organization can only advance as far as the collective consciousness of the people allow it to advance.

In this episode, Paula mentions her coaching experience with Coachville http://www.coachville.com/u and how that allowed her to realized the evolution of the reality of the world we’re living in now. She now sees that we could not have been without the Industrial Era (which created the industrial mindset). That includes our Educational System!

Think of what a repetitive system it is. But that’s not where value comes from anymore. In the 21st century, we are in this totally turned on – 24/7 – highly connected world where value is created out of the bringing together of the right resources and then creating space for spontaneous discovery of what happens now.

In the 20th century we were taught as a collective consciousness to get our work done before play. In the 21st century, we are really being pushed to ask yourself where your priorities are and where the result lay. What’s going to be the most fun? What’s going to produce the biggest results? It’s not about checking off tasks anymore.

This is why we spend so much time processing email (because we are stuck in an old paradigm). We can check email endlessly but it does not produce the results we want. Just remember that the opportunity to work never ends. It will always be there. This is about being more conscious of the work we are choosing to do.

Be the example of understanding that value is created spontaneously by applying the right resources. So as a leader you are no longer managing the process (i.e- how many worksheets got done).

What you’ve got to focus on is:

  • WHAT WANTS TO HAPPEN?
What ‘s required to make that happen?
When am I going to get those components altogether?

In this episode we’ll cover:

  • Why we must transform our old 20th century paradigm way of thinking
  • How to align with the new paradigm (21st century mindset)
  • How each of us has a unique design
  • Why organizations only advance as far as the collective consciousness of the people
  • How to distinguish which expenditures are not required to produce the result?

Practical and Actionable:

Challenging 20th century mindset to transition into the 21st: Create a time for yourself to investigate the question make a list – what do you do automatically that is processed driven rather than results driven? Where have you set up an assembly line that is continuous and never ending? Which time energy expenditures and resources not required to produce the result?

From STARTUP to CEO: What did you have to let go of?

Will admits that developing the right people skills was probably the hardest thing for him. In making that transition, he learned a lot about managing people in a startup environment versus. What did he learn? He learned how to help people make better decisions.

With as little as 10 full-time employees who get everything and more done, we’d say that’s a pretty sweet business plan Will’s got there!!

Hiring the right people

Yes, hiring the most suitable people is imperative. However, retaining them is just as important. Also don’t hurry and put in the wrong person. There’s a lot of what Will calls, We use “group thought” that goes into this. In other words, potential hires must interview with everyone on the team (not just the CEO).

What they really question in every interviewee is: “Are they committed to a startup environment and its rigors?” It is also about snagging people who want to work your vision.

Everyone is responsible for managing the revenue. That’s right: EVERYONE. Everyone shares the uniform focus that the objective of any action is to create a better customer experience. It is very much a statistical driven business.

Will’s 3 Principles:

  • Put the customer first
  • Always do the honest thing
  • Respect the individual

204-Will Seippel smIn this episode we’ll cover:

  • Choosing the right people for your company
  • Shifting from a CEO to a Startup mindset
  • Why you want people who share your vision
  • The importance of people skills
  • Why a WE mindset is better than a ME mindset

Practical and Actionable:

Bi-weekly staff meetings (which was suggested by staff- not Will) seem to be working quite well and is something Will recommends for Startup companies!
